Your paradigm for prayer has often been to ask God for something: for healing, for things, for guidance or for world peace. It might begin with praise and thanksgiving then can go into a pleading or begging mode pretty quickly. There has not been a lot of emphasis placed on a listening part once the asking part is over. It is important to create a quiet time in your prayer session when you can listen even more than you talk.
One framework for a prayer session could include: a little praise and thanksgiving to open; some asking for yourself, others and the world; a lot of silence for listening; and a ton of heart-felt gratitude to close.
